Julius Smith

Julius O. Smith is a distinguished engineer, educator, and musician focused on innovations in music and audio signal processing. After receiving his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 1975, Smith pursued his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Stanford, concentrating on statistical signal processing and digital filter design with applications in music, notably on the violin. His early career included work on digital communications at ESL, Inc., followed by adaptive filtering research at Systems Control Technology. From 1986 to 1991, Smith was pivotal in developing sound and music software at NeXT Computer. He later joined Stanford's CCRMA, where he taught and conducted research on advanced signal processing for music. Now Professor Emeritus, he continues consulting with firms like moForte Inc., contributing extensively to digital audio and music technology.
